Antognoni S, who won the John Brennan Trotting Series final at Yonkers earlier this year is the leading earner in 2025 in the first grouping (race five). Co-owner Yannick Gingras is listed to drive the 5-year-old Father Patrick gelding for trainer Ron Burke. He’ll face the likes of last year’s MGM Yonkers Trot and New York Sire Stakes champion Sir Pinocchio (post four, Jason Bartlett listed to drive for trainer Ed Hart) and $2.6 million earner Amigo Volo (post eight, George Brennan listed to drive for trainer Nifty Norman).

Periculum, one of the top trotters you’ll find anywhere, is in the second split (race seven) with Scott Zeron listed to drive the 6-year-old Muscle Hill stallion for trainer Marcus Melander. When last seen at Yonkers, Periculum was a traffic-troubled seventh in the International Trot but has a pair of wins and two seconds in stakes outings since then.

Burke and Gingras also join forces with Southwind Coors from post seven in the final section (race eight). Southwind Coors, who was fourth in the recent Breeders Crown, took the Invitational at Yonkers in his most recent outing on November 6. He will compete against the likes of Bob Miecuna Invitational Trot runner-up Security Protected (post five, Jordan Stratton listed to drive for Cory Stratton) and defending series champion Take All Comers (post four, Todd McCarthy listed to drive for Jim Campbell).

The MGM Grand Prix Trotting Series has two additional legs after Friday, with round two on Friday, December 1 and the third prelim on Friday, December 8 before the final on Friday, December 19. Points for the series will be earned on a 50-25-12-8-5 scale (winner gets 50 points, runner-up gets 25, etc.). The top 10 point earners get a spot in the $250,000, 1 1/4 mile final, while the next 10 point earners go in the $75,000, 1 1/4 mile consolation on the same card.

Additional details for the companion MGM Grand Prix Pacing Series will be distributed when the opener of that event is drawn on Tuesday (November 18).

MGM Yonkers Raceway is currently operating on a Monday through Friday live racing schedule with post time each night at 6:45 p.m. (EST).

In the $421,000 Valley Victory, for 2-year-old male trotters, Diabolic Hill yielded mid-race to Spencer Hanover before getting the better of him in a stretch-long duel, prevailing in 1:53.3 over good going.

Diabolic Hill and driver Todd McCarthy followed AI (driven by Yannick Gingras) in a two-wide tow on the first turn through a :28.3 first quarter before pushing clear with five-eighths to go and immediately yielding to Spencer Hanover (Jason Bartlett) to stalk a :56.3 half.

With five-sixteenths remaining, McCarthy was back out and moving with Diabolic Hill, and the Muscle Hill-Crysti Dream colt stuck a head in front off the corner for home.

Spencer Hanover fought back inside at the eighth pole, but Diabolic Hill countered his rival’s move and reached the winning post a head in front. Nix Nacken (Dexter Dunn) finished third, beaten 3-1/4 lengths.

“He’s just phenomenal — the way he fought down the stretch, you can’t ask for more from a horse,” said trainer Annie Stoebe, who co-owns Diabolic Hill with Mazza Racing Stables. “Him going on the road really helped (with his maturity); he’s just a smart boy. It’s so rewarding to have an animal that powerful perform like that.”

Now a five-time winner from 10 starts with $506,636 in earnings, Diabolic Hill paid $4.20 to win as the even-money favorite.

DIOBOLIC HILL REPLAY



After being just upended by Busy Miss Lissy S in the Kindergarten final two weeks ago, All Time Trot S (Googoo Gaagaa) turned the tables in the $462,000 Goldsmith Maid, for 2-year-old trotting fillies, drafting in the pocket behind her fellow Åke Svanstedt trainee before unleashing a :27.3 stretch push to reel her in and also hold off runner-up Nezuko Kamado S for a lifetime-best 1:54 score.

In line to Yannick Gingras, All Time Trot S secured a two-hole ride behind another stablemate in Isabella Bi (Åke Svanstedt) through a :27.4 quarter before briefly taking over with five-eighths to go and then yielding to Busy Miss Lissy S (Johnathan Ahle), who forged off cover to clear the front before a :57.1 half. The Googoo Gaagaa-Gorgeous AM filly enjoyed clear sailing from the pocket through three-quarters in 1:26.1 before switching off the pegs at the eighth pole.

“You’ve got to respect the others, but I thought I had [Ahle] beat before I pulled,” said Gingras of his mid-stretch move with All Time Trot S. “I had a handful of trot, but I could tell Åke had a little trot behind me, too, so I was biding my time and not trying to pull too early.”

It took a few strides for All Time Trot S to switch gears, but she collared Busy Miss Lissy S with a sixteenth to go and outlasted a late charge from 9-5 favorite Nezuko Kamado S (Scott Zeron) by a half length. Busy Miss Lissy S finished a game third.

“She deserves it; she’s a top filly,” concluded Gingras.

Now a three-time winner from seven starts, All Time Trot S increased her career earnings to $278,202 with the biggest win of her career. Robert Lindstrom, whose Midnight Sun Partners own All Time Trot S, bred the filly in partnership with Ove Karlsson.

As the 3-1 third choice, All Time Trot S paid $8.40 to win.

FALL FINAL FABULOUS: A 20-cent Pick-6 double carryover of $9,241 motivated players to pour $59,479 of “new money” into the pot, and after Dance Partner scored in the 12^th race at odds of 30-1, that set up three players to cash in for $19,929.72 after even-money favorite Like A Shadow scored in the 13^th. … Yannick Gingras and Ron Burke led the driver and trainer colonies, respectively, with four winners each. They teamed up to win three times on the program. … All-source handle on the 14-race card totaled $3,443,597, which represented an increase of $116,217 over the corresponding card from last year. … Racing resumes Thursday at 6:20 p.m.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 10, 2025 — Canadian representative James MacDonald was crowned the 2025 World Driving Champion during the final leg of the competition at Addington Raceway in Christchurch, New Zealand on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

MacDonald secured the 2025 World Driving Championship title with a seventh-place finish in rein to the Korbyn Newman-trained trotter Alotoftrouble in the 20th and final race of the tournament, which began on Sunday, Nov. 2 and was contested over six race days across New Zealand tracks.

Australia’s Gary Hall Jr. led throughout the first five races over two legs at Kaikoura Trotting Club in Kaikoura with MacDonald climbing from sixth-place to second in the point standings before taking the lead at the start of the third leg at Cambridge Raceway in Cambridge with his first of two driving victories on the day.

MacDonald picked up another driving win and maintained his place atop the leaderboard during leg four at Addington Raceway in Christchurch and nearly had the title wrapped up by the end of the fifth leg at Central Southland Raceway in Winton as he consistently earned points throughout the competition.

Back at Addington Raceway on Tuesday during New Zealand Cup Day with just one race scheduled for the last leg of the tournament, MacDonald finalized the result and delivered Canada another World Driving Championship title.

Canadian drivers have now won four of the 11 World Driving Championships contested in the 21st century — the most out of all countries for that period — and a total of six times since the international harness driving competition was first held in 1970. MacDonald has earned two of those titles, having previously won the 2017 World Driving Championship when Canada last hosted the biennial event. A native of Prince Edward Island based in Guelph, Ont., the 39-year-old reinsman will get the opportunity to defend his title on home soil when Canada hosts the next World Driving Championship at tracks across the country in 2027.

The reigning four-time O’Brien Award winner as Canada’s Driver of the Year, MacDonald has driven winners of 4,282 races and nearly $85 million in purses in North America during his career, including 444 races and more than $12.3 million during a career-year in 2024.

Kadena was among five horses to sell for at least $500,000 on Friday in Harrisburg. The others were 4-year-old trotting mare Date Night Hanover, for $985,000 to Armitage Farm; 3-year-old trotting filly What A Bid Hanover, for $650,000 to Kountry Lane Standardbreds; 3-year-old pacing filly Rodeo Drive Deo, for $650,000 to Cindy Stewart, and 3-year-old pacing colt Fallout, for $500,000 to Ron Burke Racing.

Overall, the two-day mixed sale totaled nearly $38.6 million, a record for the event, for 699 horses and stallion shares. The previous high, $31.6 million for 597 horses and stallion shares, was established last year. This year’s mixed sale average of $55,156 also was a record, bettering the $52,945 average established last year.

Kadena, who sold for $800,000 at the 2023 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale – which at the time equaled the highest price ever for a trotting filly at a yearling auction, was the top seller at this year’s Standardbred Horse Sale, besting the $1.15 million for 4-year-old trotting mare French Champagne one day earlier in Harrisburg.

A three-quarter sister to this year’s multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning 2-year-old colt Apex, Kadena won a division of the Bluegrass Stakes (G3) in a career-best 1:51 on Sept. 27 at Lexington’s Red Mile. She was trained by Marcus Melander.

Date Night Hanover, another Melander trainee, trotted a career-best 1:49.2 (tied for the second fastest mile of the year by a trotter) on Oct. 5 in winning the Allerage Mare Trot at The Red Mile. She is a daughter of Chapter Seven-Don’t Wait Up and half-sister to Grand Circuit winner Delayed Hanover. The family also includes millionaire Periculum.

What A Bid Hanover, a daughter of Muscle Hill-What A Knockout, won the Goldsmith Maid (G1) at age 2. Her family also includes Southwind Serena, the dam of the aforementioned Mission Brief and stallion Tactical Landing. She was trained by Ake Svanstedt.

Rodeo Drive Deo, a multiple graded-stakes winning daughter of Captaintreacherous-Miss L A, counted the Jugette (G1) and USS Indianapolis (G3) among her victories in 2025. She also won the 2024 Kindergarten Classic Series final (G3). Her family includes multiple O’Brien Award-winner L A Delight. She was trained by Ron Burke.

Ron Burke Racing purchased Fallout, a son of Captaintreacherous-Aria Hanover who won the Metro Pace (G1) in 2024 and is a full brother to former Burke standout and millionaire Blue Diamond Eyes. Fallout was trained by Tony Alagna.

Orange’s big moment was his win with Always A Menace in the first of the night’s five heats. Not only did it continue his move up on the leaderboard but it was his 3000th New Zealand victory, a win made all the more special wearing the Silver Fern and coming on his home track in front of family and friends.

As well as MacDonald (Waihemo Hannah) and Orange the other three heat winners were Pierre Vercruysse (France) with One Eye Bandit, Djuse (Mr Cash Man) and American Brett Beckwith who romped away to a huge victory with Look To Da Stars.

The WDC now heads to Winton for four more heats then there is the final heat at Addington as part of IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup day on Tuesday.

Beckwith and Look To Da Stars raced in the outer flow throughout the early stages of the 1,980-meter race, getting away fourth-over in eighth before eventually finding themselves uncovered on their way down the backstretch to the final turn. At that point, Beckwith stepped on the gas and the 5-year-old trotter responded by taking the lead from Sandfly Bay, driven by New Zealand’s Blair Orange, and drawing away from the field.

“That was awesome,” said Beckwith, who drove Look To Da Stars for trainers Mark and Nathan Purdon and owner Thompson Bloodstock, via text. “It was one of the most special wins I’ve ever had. I had a great fan base rooting me on. A big shoutout to the Pattersons (of the Commodore Hotel), who sponsored the race, a great family, and my man Andrew Stuart and ‘Magic’ (Jason Broad) for supporting me through the whole trip.”

Beckwith had not enjoyed the best luck during the first three rounds of the World Driving Championship but opened Friday’s fourth day with a second-place finish behind Sandy Shore before breaking through for his first victory three races later.

“It’s been a rough week, but we finally got a win, thankfully,” Beckwith said in a Trackside NZ interview after the race. “The trainer had this one ready to go.”

He added about the experience of competing in the WDC in New Zealand, “It’s been awesome. It’s a beautiful country, great people. It’s tough to dream about something like this, especially coming over here and racing horses.”

In the day’s first WDC dash, Orange got his 3,000th lifetime New Zealand victory, with pacing mare Always A Menace. The 47-year-old Orange became the youngest driver to reach 3,000 in New Zealand, and the fourth driver overall.

Also winning races Friday were Canada’s James MacDonald, Sweden’s Mats Djuse and France’s Pierre Vercruysse.

After 15 of the WDC’s 20 races, MacDonald remained the leader, with 130 points, followed by Australia’s Gary Hall Jr. and Djuse. Beckwith was in ninth.

The WDC visits Winton for four dashes on Sunday (Nov. 9) before concluding with a single race back at Addington on Tuesday (Nov. 11), New Zealand Cup Day.

The Dutch connection at Addington tonight

There’ll be dual Dutch delight if the very Irish-sounding Just Ask Paddy can win at Addington tonight.

The Gold Ace gelding lines up in Heat 13 of the World Driving Championship (7.24pm).

Representing the Netherlands in the WDC Jaap van Rijn will drive the $9 fourth favourite in the Stevie and Maree Harcourts Hornby WDC heat – not that the Dutch connection ends there.

Just Ask Paddy was bred by retired Marlborough-based vet David Sim and is raced by him and his Dutch wife Anke.

“We’ve been married 48 years,” says Dr Sim, “and that is the first horse she’s been in – the first one she’s had a share in.”

And it’s been a pretty successful partnership so far. Just Ask Paddy has won three races from 27 starts, the latest of them at Addington on October 1 in an amateur drivers’ race.

“He’s certainly exceeded expectations,” says Sim.

Sim is a stablehand for Just Ask Paddy’s trainer Tony Thomas and does a lot of work with his horse.

“He’s having a ball with that horse,” says Thomas.

“And it’s great how that Dutch connection has come about – it’s just the luck of the draw really.”

Van Rijn is seeking his second win this WDC. He was a big winner at Kaikoura when It’s Tough dominated his heat on Monday.

WDC Meet and Greet

There will also be a Meet and Greet with the WDC drivers at Addington this afternoon, starting a 3.45pm.

The drivers will do a signing session and there will also be a parade with the first race going at 4.55pm.

Last night at Cambridge Canada’s James MacDonald and Sweden’s Mats Djuse both had two wins apiece and Orange also starred by going from ninth place into fourth thanks to one win, two thirds and a fourth.

His win was his first of the series so far.

At the halfway mark (10 of 20 heats) Orange has 68 points, 30 leader behind leader and 2017 WDC champion MacDonald (98).

MacDonald’s night started strongly in Heat 6, where he guided the Steve and Amanda Telfer-trained Captain’s Secret to victory. Drawing perfectly in barrier two for the 1700m trip, MacDonald used the pacer’s early speed to take control heading into the first bend. After briefly handing up to Bruntwood Brigade, he quickly angled back out to reclaim the front, dictating terms from there. Captain’s Secret never looked back, cruising home in a sharp 1:55.2 mile to score by a length.

Heat 7 saw Sweden’s Mats Djuse strike back with a perfectly judged drive aboard the Ival Brownlee-trained Brienne. From the inside draw, Djuse positioned the mare in the trail and made the most of the passing lane, sprinting through late to score by half a length.

MacDonald added another to his tally in Heat 8, teaming up with the Jay Abernethy-trained Mick Konstantin. Once again, the Canadian made the most of the barrier one draw, pinging straight to the lead and never looking back. The gelding travelled sweetly throughout and left his rivals standing when MacDonald asked for an effort at the 800m mark, surging clear to record an emphatic five-length victory.

Djuse wasn’t done yet, claiming his second win of the night in Heat 9 behind Son Of Patrick, trained by Derek and Neita Balle. After settling three back in the running line, the Swede angled the gelding wide from the 500m and finished strongly to nab the leaders right on the line, winning by a narrow head in a thrilling finish.

Orange kept his best to last, delivering a dominant performance aboard Melton Mogul for trainer Scott Dickson. Sitting beautifully in the one-one, Orange waited until the home straight to make his move, unleashing a powerful sprint to win by two and three-quarter lengths — a confident drive that reminded everyone why he’s among the best in the business.

With five competitive heats on the programme, seasoned race caller Aaron White reckons there’s one harness racing driver who looks especially well-placed to make an impact.

“At first glance, James MacDonald looks like he’s got the best pick,” White said. “He looks like he’s in for a very good night with the horses he’s got.”

The Canadian, who won the WDC in 2017, is currently on 41 points after five heats at Kaikoura, 13 behind leader Gary Hall junior from Australia. New Zealand’s representative Blair Orange is ninth on 22 points.

MacDonald’s night kicks off in Heat 6 (6.04pm) with Captain’s Secret, trained by Steve and Amanda Telfer. The consistent pacer has been racing solidly in strong company and draws well enough to be a factor.

In Heat 7 (6.40pm), MacDonald will steer Trifolium, a trotter from the local stable of Andrew and Lyn Neal, before engaging his third drive of the night, Mick Konstantin (7.14pm).

“As for his best for the night I’d probably go with Mick Konstantin from barrier one,” he said. “He’s a good, tough horse. Cambridge might not be his ideal track, but from that draw — and with James on — that looks his best drive.”

MacDonald will then partner Sans Au Revoir in Heat 9 (7.40pm), another trotter with a strong finish who should appreciate a good run in transit, before wrapping up his evening with Commander Lincoln in Heat 10 (8.16pm).

White says the overall line-up gives MacDonald plenty of opportunities to accumulate points and keep himself right in the mix for the WDC title.

“If you’re looking for a driver to follow tonight, I’d be on the Maple Leaf,”

While White was quick to back the Canadian, he also acknowledged the wider field and the strength of competition across the championship.

“My favourite driver, of course, has to be our kiwi Blair,” he said. “But Gary Hall Junior’s been flying the Australian flag high. He’s not just driving the favourites — he’s putting the roughies in the right places and getting results, which is what you like to see.”

Firstly it was Jaap van Rijn from the Netherlands who took out Heat 4 and then it was Germany’s Michael Nimczyk who prevailed in the second and final harness racing heat of the day with the Matt Purvis-trained Flying Bird.

Their victories completed a hat-trick for the Europeans, following Italian Giampaolo Minnucci’s win in the third heat yesterday.

The opening two heats were taken out by Australia’s Gary Hall Junior.

In today’s heats It’s Tough produced a powerhouse performance to run away from his opposition for van Rijn. It was the Robert and Jenna Dunn-trained four-year-old’s fifth win in his last six starts.

Flying Bird was also tough in her run. She got to the front and then held on for a gritty win as Major Happy and Miki’s Courage charged late.

New Zealand’s representative Blair Orange is currently ninth on 22 points, 32 behind Hall, after finishing seventh with Classie Linc in the opening heat today, and then last with Gem N Em.

And it was a powerhouse harness racing performance at the South Bay race course in Kaikoura in heat 4 of the WDC.

Van Rijn made a mid race move with favourite It’s Tough and from there it was all over.

The Robert and Jenna Dunn-trained four year old has been in outstanding form and just powered away from his opposition to win effortlessly. It was his fifth win in his last six starts.

IT’S TOUGH REPLAY



For van Rijn it was a welcome return to form. He was last on five points after the opening day at Kaikoura yesterday.

The WDC has one more heat today at 2.15pm before heading to Cambridge for five more heats on Wednesday.

The WDC overall has 20 heats culminating in a world champion being crowned on IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup day at Addington on Tuesday, November 11.

Ten of the world’s best drivers are taking part including New Zealand’s Blair Orange who was sixth equal after the opening day.

It’s a brilliant day in Kaikoura for its biggest day of the year.

Highlighting the action will be the 100th running of the Alabar Kaikoura Cup at 4.40pm, the White Morph South Bay Trotters Cup at 4.03pm and the NZBS Yearling Sales Aged Classic Handicap Pace at 3.24pm.

Australian representative Gary Hall Junior will take a 15 point lead into the second day of the World Driving Championship at Kaikoura on Monday.

On Sunday the multiple Group 1 winning harness racing driver from Perth had almost the perfect start to WDC 2025 with two wins and a second from the opening three heats.

He has 44 points, with Italian Giampaolo Minnucci second on 29, and former world champion Pierre Vercruysse third on 21. New Zealand’s representative Blair Orange is sixth equal on 17 points. His best performance was a third with Ohoka Cobra in the day’s third heat.

Hall was installed the outright favourite for the WDC after the fields were released for the opening day at Kaikoura and he didn’t disappoint.

“Everyone told me if you are not leading after the first day they’ll be something wrong with you – so I’m pretty happy,” Hall said post race.

He won the first heat comfortably when the in-form Tom Bagrie-trained Hoof It Hagrid held on from a game Rachmaninov and Granny Rose while hotpot Midnight Diamond was drawn one the second row in Heat 2 but found space early on and cruised by her rivals to win easily. It was the Ross Houghton-trained mare’s fourth win in a row.

In the day’s third and final heat Hall was leading with Spirit Downunder only to be run down by Scrunch (Giampaolo Minnucci), trained by Robert and Jenna Dunn.

The two wins and a second capped off a big few days for Hall after he couldn’t find his passport and was in danger of missing his flight, only to get a replacement at the very last minute.

“It was the most stressful day of my life I reckon,” he says.

Monday will see two more heats, Race 3, the Donegal House Heat 4 (1.20pm) and the Kaikoura ITM-sponsored Race 5 at 2.16pm

The day will also feature the 100th running of the Alabar NZ Kaikoura Cup at 4.40pm.

After Kaikoura’s two day meeting the WDC heads to Cambridge on Wednesday where there will be another five heats.

Then it’s on to Addington on Friday (Nov 7) and Winton (Nov 9) before the grand finale on IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup day at Addington on Tuesday, November 11.

Japan superstar Forever Young turned the tables on his biggest foes and rolled to victory in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar on Saturday.

Although early favorite Sovereignty was scratched, the 10-horse field was still one of the deepest in the 42-year history of the 1 ¼-mile Classic. And it was a race that couldn’t come soon enough for Forever Young.

Both trainer Yoshito Yahagi and jockey Ryusei Sakai admitted they sought redemption in America after Forever Young finished third behind Sierra Leone and Fierceness in last year’s Classic also at Del Mar.

On a day that began with several upsets, including a record-setting payoff in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) -- Ethical Diamond ($57.40) -- Forever Young proved he’s among the world’s best racehorses.

Racing comfortably behind expected pacesetter Contrary Thinking, with Mindframe and Fierceness also in close pursuit, Forever Young (7-2) took the lead rounding the final turn into the stretch. Journalism briefly challenged, but dropped back and Sierra Leone (7-2), ridden by Flavien Prat, made his patented closing charge, but Forever Young held strong and won by a half-length.

Fierceness, the 3-1 favorite in the final race of his career, was third, another length back, and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Journalism fourth. Mindframe was fifth, followed by Baeza, Nevada Beach, Antiquarian, and Contrary Thinking.

Winning time was 2:00.19. The winner returned $9 on a $2 win bet.

Forever Young has won all nine of his races in Japan and had three third-place finishes in his other three starts – to Mystik Dan and Sierra Leone on the 2024 Kentucky Derby (G1), to Sierra Leone and Fierceness in the 2024 Classic, and to Hit Show and Mixto in the Dubai World Cup (G1) on April 12. He won a race in Japan on October 10 as preparation before coming to California.

“We got the No. 1 in America,” Yahagi, wearing one of his colorful hats -- a wide-rim black fedora–– said, raising a fist to the sky.

The victory was worth $3,640,000 and increased Forever Young’s earnings to $19,358,590 with a record of 10 wins and three thirds in 13 starts.

It was the third time a Japan-bred won a Breeders’ Cup race – the other two came at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar – and Yahagi was the trainer.

Chad Brown, who trains Sierra Leone and Contrary Thinking, gave credit to Forever Young.

“Huge run. Look, the winner ran a terrific race. He was up on the pace and kicked,’’ Brown said. “I think the track played against us today. Not to take anything away from the winner, but it’s been speed all day. I’m so proud of my horse’s effort.”

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint: Splendora gives Baffert 20th win

Splendora ($7.80) overtook stablemate Hope Road coming out of the final turn and cruised to a 4 ¾-length victory over Vahva in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), giving trainer Bob Baffert his 20th Breeders’ Cup win.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, the 4-year-old filly won for the third straight time and improved her record to five wins and four seconds in 10 career starts. Winning time for the 7 furlongs was 1:21.79.

The field was reduced to seven with the scratches of morning-line favorite Sweet Azteca, Tamara, and Fee Blanche.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Result: Shisospicy goes gate-to-wire

Shisospicy ($12.60) broke fastest off all and was never challenged in a gate-to-wire, 2 ½-length victory over Ag Bullet in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1), the second of nine Breeders’ Cup races Saturday.

Ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Shisospicy is the first 3-year-old filly to win this race. Winning time for the 5-furlong sprint was 55.24. Khadeem was third in the 10-horse field. This was the first Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Jose D’Angelo.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Result: Bentornato wins for D’Angelo/Irad Ortiz team

Bentornato ($5.40), the 8-5 favorite, dusted off defending champ Straight No Chaser early on and beat Imagination by 2¼ lengths in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), giving trainer Jose D’Angelo and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. a second straight win.

The 4-year-old ridgling improved his record to seven wins and two seconds in 11 career starts. Winning time for the 6 furlongs was 1:08.20. For Ortiz, it was his 23rd overall Breeders’ Cup win. Dr. Venkman was third.

Straight No Chaser finished seventh in the 14-horse field.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Result: Scylla rolls for Sovereignty trainer Bill Mott

Scylla ($17.20) took jockey Junior Alvarado on a perfect trip around Del Mar, easily fending off Nitrogen and rolling to a 5 ½-length victory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

Seismic Beauty, the 6-5 favorite for trainer Bob Baffert, had a slight stumble at the start and finished 12th of 13.

The win had to be sweet for Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who also trained top Horse of the Year contenders Sovereignty, who was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) earlier in the week.

Sylla, a 5-year-old mare owned by Juddmonte, closed out her career in style with an impressive resume of six wins and five seconds from 16 starts and earnings of more than $2.2 million.

Winning time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:48.07.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Result: Ethical Diamond ($57.40) upsets Rebel’s Romance

In the biggest stunner of the day, Ethical Diamond ($57.40) came flying through the stretch and blew past favorites Minnie Hauk, Rebel’s Romance, and Goliath and won the $5 million Breeders’ Turf (G1) for world-renowned steeplechase trainer Willie Mullins.

Dismissed at 25-1 odds – the 5-year-old gelding also runs in hurdle races – Ethical Diamond won by 1 ¼ lengths over Rebel’s Romance, who won the Turf in 2022 and 2024, and came up short in his quest to become a three-time winner.

The winner was ridden by Dylan McMonagle, last year’s leading rider in Ireland.

According to the Breeders’ Cup, the $57.40 return on a $2 win bet is a record for the Turf – Lashkari won Turf in the first Breeders Cup in 1984 and returned $53.40.

El Cordobes was third, with Amiloc fourth.

Breeders’ Cup Mile: Notable Speech comes through for Europe

Notable Speech, the favorite trained by Charlie Appleby, won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) as Europe continued dominating this mile race on the turf.

Ridden by William Buick, the 4-year-old won the Woodbine Mile (G1) on Sept. 13 as a prep for the BC Mile. Notable Speech finished third in the 2024 BC Mile.
